Father Joe O’Connor: Iron Man in the making!

A Thanksgiving 2023 “Gratitude Run” in the Baldwinsville area helped Father (second from right) stay primed for the big event.

Next weekend, Father Joe O’Connor, pastor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. Augustine’s, and St. Mary of the Assumption in Baldwinsville, will head to the hills to compete in the Ironman Lake Placid. The 140-mile race begins at 6:30 am on Sunday, July 21. Folks can track his progress through the 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and marathon (26.2 miles). Go to the Ironman website or download the Ironman Athlete Tracker App to stay up to “speed” throughout the day!

“The training has been significant: 8-12 hours per week. When I first looked at the training plan six months ago, I was overwhelmed and had no idea how I would fit it all in.  By taking things one week at a time (one day, really), I got through it, often with the help of others.  This has been formative in the way I have looked at the new assignment of parishes.  Others are looking out for me and sharing wisdom from having been down the road before, providing a “Guide” of sorts.  Most importantly, though, when I begin to feel overwhelmed, I am reminded that I don’t have to have the plan, I know the One who does.  Stay close to Him and receive it from Him.”

This will be Father’s second Ironman, having completed the Ironman Florida in 2011. Check out the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Facebook page for post-race photos!
